One-page resume template

A one-page resume is the usual choice for students, graduates and people with up to about seven years of experience. The editor shows your page break as you type, so you can see when content starts to run onto a second page.

Common practice, not fixed rules. Employers differ, so follow the job ad when it asks for something specific.

Sections to include, in order

  1. Contact details. One line: phone, email, city, LinkedIn.
  2. Short summary. Two or three lines, or leave it out if your experience speaks for itself.
  3. Experience. Recent roles in detail, older roles in one or two lines.
  4. Education. Degree, school and year.
  5. Skills. One or two lines of the skills that match the job.

Tips

  • Cut points that do not support the job you want.
  • Merge short or similar roles at the same employer.
  • Use a compact template and slightly smaller spacing before you cut content that matters.
  • Do not shrink the text below a comfortable reading size just to fit.

Questions

Should my resume be one page?

If you have less than about seven years of experience, one page is usually enough. With a longer career, two pages are common and accepted.

How do I fit my resume on one page?

Shorten older roles, keep three to five points per role, cut a long summary and use a compact template. The editor shows the page break as you go.

Is a two-column template better for one page?

It can fit more, but a single column is easier for applicant tracking systems to read. For online applications a compact one-column template is the safer choice.
